Sabbath when is it?

The Sabbath, one of the most important times we can spend with the Father...and one that the enemy tries so hard to confuse. There are so many different versions. Some hold the Sabbath from evening to evening, sunset to sunset, sunrise to sunrise, dawn to dark, and sunrise to sunset. So what does the Bible say about it?

Exo 31:13 Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my Sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am YHWH that doth sanctify you.
Exo 31:14 Ye shall keep the Sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: every one that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.

And when is the Sabbath?
The Bible starts in the beginning, the first day, with verse 1-4 talking about what He created and on that first day He divided light from darkness, defining the light Day and the darkness Night, then evening came and then morning ended the 1st day...
Gen 1:5 And Elohim called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

So the 1st day ends in the morning and the 2nd day starts in morning and He worked from morning until evening, dividing Heaven from Earth and then the evening came and morning ended the 2nd day...
Gen 1:8 And Elohim called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

Then the 3rd day starts in morning and He works that day separating the water from the land and creating the plants from morning until evening, then came evening then morning ended the third day.
Gen 1:13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.

The pattern continues from day one to day 6...First, He works during the day then comes evening then the next morning ends that day...and morning begins the next day. Day starts day. Step two is to establish what part of that is set apart by YHWH as a holy time. In Chapter two He tells us about the very first Sabbath!!!

Gen 2:2 And on the seventh day Elohim [Hebrew for Supreme Being, which is much more accurate than using the word god], ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.
Gen 2:3 And Elohim blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which Elohim created and made.

He tells us in verse 2 the Sabbath Day is on the 7th day during the period that He had worked, and He repeats in verse 3 it is on the 7th day and is the rest from all His work, and when did He work? He shows us in all His examples in Chapter one that the work was done between morning and evening. And remember, Genesis Chapter 1 vs 4 and 5 clarified for us also that the Day is during the period of light.

Isa 45:6 That they may know from the rising of the sun, and from the west, [sunset], that there is none beside me. I am YHWH, and there is none else.

Eze. particularly, chapter 46 sheds light on this subject as well.

Eze 46:1 Thus saith the Master YHWH; The gate of the inner court [the glory of YHWH fills, Eze 43:5] that looketh toward the east shall be shut the six working days; but on the Sabbath it shall be opened, and in the day of the new moon it shall be opened.
Eze 46:2 And the prince shall enter by the way of the porch of that gate without, and shall stand by the post of the gate, and the priests shall prepare his burnt offering and his peace offerings, and he shall worship at the threshold of the gate: then he shall go forth; but the gate shall not be shut until the evening.
Eze 46:3 Likewise the people of the land shall worship at the door of this gate before YHWH in the Sabbaths and in the new moons.

During the Sabbaths we worship at the door of the east gate, this gate is open in the Sabbath Day until evening. We have other verses that clarify that the Sabbath starts in the morning, but none so clear as this that the door of the gate that we will be worshiping at on the weekly Sabbaths will be closed in the evening.

Why then do some do the Sabbath on the first day?
Because a Roman pope years ago decided to change it to the first day, (check wiki or the web for more info)...but no where in the Bible does our Father in Heaven give man the authority to change His holy days.

Mar 7:9 And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of YHWH, that ye may keep your own tradition.

Col 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments, [order], of the world, and not after the Messiah.

Some do the Sabbath on the 7th day but start in the evening...are there other verses to show it starts in the day with the light?
Sure, in fact it would take several pages to list all the verses that show it but to keep it simple and exciting (it is fun to see all the verses that the Father will reveal if you ask Him too), here are just a few...

these count the hours of the day, and that count starts with the beginning of the day at sunrise.
Act 2:15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.

Act 10:3 He saw in a vision evidently about the ninth hour of the day an angel of YHWH coming in to him, and saying unto him, Cornelius.

Mat 20:3 And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace,

Mat 20:6 And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle?

Here Moses instructs the people to gather on the 6th day and keep it until the Sabbath, "to morrow", which begins in the morning.
Exo 16:23 And he said unto them, This is that which YHWH hath said, To morrow is the rest of the holy Sabbath unto YHWH: bake that which ye will bake to day, and seethe that ye will seethe; and that which remaineth over lay up for you to be kept until the morning.

This story talks about what they will do tomorrow, and it was on the morrow that they came in the middle of the morning and slew the Amonites until the heat of day.
1Sa 11:9 And they said unto the messengers that came, Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabesh-gilead, To morrow, by that time the sun be hot, ye shall have help. And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh; and they were glad.
1Sa 11:10 Therefore the men of Jabesh said, To morrow we will come out unto you, and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you.
1Sa 11:11 And it was so on the morrow, that Saul put the people in three companies; and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch, and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day: and it came to pass, that they which remained were scattered, so that two of them were not left together.

Once a person accepts that our Father in Heaven starts His day with the sun rise and not at midnight as the current calendar, or in the dark as the Jews then the verses start to come forward one after another after another.

Jas 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

Is it important when we do the Sabbath as long as we do it sometime?
If you want to count yourself as a child of YHWH's yes, it matters tremendously.

Exo 31:13 Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my Sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am YHWH [YHWH is the actual letters that represent the name of our Father in Heaven], that doth sanctify you.

Exo 31:17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days YHWH made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.

It is a sign that stands with the children of Israel that they are of our Father in Heaven. So it is a choice of do you want to have the sign that is between the Father and His children? If you say you do the Sabbath but do YOURs on the 1st day...then you are following the traditions of man but not taking part of the sign between YHWH and His children.

But I am not a child of Israel.
Wow, all I can say to that is I am sorry to hear that, but we each have the free will to choose the path of the Father or not. As for me, I am thankful to be grafted in and I pray to be found worthy and spared by Him.

Rom 11:19 You shall say then, "The branches were broken off that I might be grafted in."
Rom 11:20 Good! By unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by belief. Do not be arrogant, but fear.
Rom 11:21 For if Elohim did not spare the natural branches, He might not spare you either.

What about those that do a 24 hour Sabbath? whether they start in the evening on the 6th day or at sunrise on the 7th? Do they get to be included in the sign?
Of course, the Father only made holy the hours that He worked, which are the hours of daylight. As long as they are including that time they are still honoring the Sabbath. The extra time could be called a freewill offering but I wonder though about calling something holy that is not?

What about resting from work but going to games, party's etc. Or to even plan events at the end of a Sabbath?
The Father has shown us through dreams that this is so wrong to look toward the end of the Sabbath that for those that do this they have already missed it! There is more to a Sabbath than just not working...it is to delight in the time that we get to spend with the Father...to delight in that time MORE than we would delight in our own thoughts...To look towards the beginning of the Sabbath...but not to look toward the end of it.

Isa 58:13 If thou turn away thy foot from the Sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy of YHWH, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:
Isa 58:14 Then shalt thou delight thyself in YHWH; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of YHWH hath spoken it.

But these verses are all from the old testament, does the new testament include the Sabbath?
Sure, in fact the Messiah taught on the Sabbath's, and we are to walk as He walked.

Mar 1:21 And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the Sabbath day he [the Messiah] entered into the synagogue, and taught.
Mar 1:22 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.

Mar 6:2 And when the Sabbath day was come, he began to teach in the synagogue: and many hearing him were astonished, saying, From whence hath this man these things? and what wisdom is this which is given unto him, that even such mighty works are wrought by his hands?

Luk 4:16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

Luk 6:6 And it came to pass also on another Sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered.

Luk 13:10 And he was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath.

I pray that through these verses I have been able to teach what I have learned and that it gives you a start to study the word diligently as to if these things are so...asking the Father to be your teacher.

If you need to see a more complete list of verses or more indepth study on the sunrise to sunset Sabbath go here . or go to e-sword and type in words such as "to morrow" and read how the day is reckoned and allow YHWH to take you through the verses.
